Project Goal
The Cryogenic Tank Stack is the fully integrated stackup of both LNG and LOX pressure tanks alongside the complete GN2 backpress system.
We intend to design and build this complete stackup to validate our backpress schema on a LN2 and Helium system prior to running hazardous propellants like LOX or LNG. We will also be using this to develop testing procedures for fully integrated tests.
Design Requirements
- Cryogenic Compatible
- Oxygen Compatible
- Support a 6.5 kN engine
- 1.5 - 2.5 kg/s LOX
- 0.5 - 1.5 kg/s LNG
- Roughly 15 - 25 second burn time
- Modular (Can support future revisions without redesign)
- Low fluid velocity on feedlines ( < 5 m/s )
- GN2 Backpress system
- Operates without GN2 regulator
- Bang-Bang valve actuation
- Uses K-bottle service pressure (153 bar)
- COPV accumulator (vehicle setup simulator)
- Maintain stable tank pressure with no significant variation
- Maintain at minimum 100-150 psi pressure
- Subcool propellants to prevent cavitation
- Supply adequate inlet pressure to meet expected NPSHr
- Fail-safes
- Boil-off worst case scenario venting
- Press valves stuck open venting
- Minimal controlled leak paths
- Mostly remote operations
- At minimum 2x FOS on joints
- Minimal part count
